Discovery Tech team helps customers discover and engage with new, popular and relevant products across Amazon worldwide. We do this by combining technology, science, innovation and creativity to build new customer-facing features and experiences alongside AI tools for marketers.
You will be responsible for creating products that help customers to shop cross-category, easily discover new ideas, new categories and new brands and have fun while shopping. Through leveraging machine-learning models, you will drive opportunities to automate Amazon’s cross-category marketing and merchandising and will help to deliver the best possible shopping experience for Amazon’s customers all over the globe.

A successful candidate will have a strong sense of ownership, great judgement, be highly analytical, able to work effectively in a matrixed organization, and adept at synthesizing a variety of technologies and capabilities into products that customers love. The ideal candidate for this role will be customer-obsessed with the capability to dive in and learn new technologies fast and who is comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; will be a creative and an analytical problem solver.


Key job responsibilities
- Lead a team of Software Development Engineers in designing and architecting products and tools that leverage the latest AI technologies for Amazon's merchandising and marketing systems, setting technical vision and strategic direction.
- Create scalable, distributed systems architecture that integrates AI/ML capabilities to power worldwide, year-round merchandising opportunities while maintaining exceptional quality through continuous learning systems.
- Collaborate with applied scientists, UX researchers, designers, and business stakeholders to define roadmaps, customer experiences, and scaling opportunities for the Automated Merchandising platform.
- Establish structures that enable your team to solve complex problems and deliver impactful software systems, building audit mechanisms and metrics that demonstrate your team's performance against goals.
- Drive architectural decisions and technical strategy for hyper-local merchandising capabilities that can adapt to regional festivals and local events across all marketplaces, ensuring maintainability and operational excellence.

A day in the life
You'll start your day reviewing key metrics from your team systems before leading a technical design review for new features. Throughout the day, you'll manage a team of SDEs, collaborate with applied scientists on AI model enhancements, and work with UX research and design to refine the customer experience. You'll meet with business stakeholders to align technical direction with merchandising strategy, mentor team members on technical challenges, and coordinate with partner teams to scale learnings across Amazon.

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of Software Engineer, Software Developer, or related occupational experience
- 3+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using service-oriented architecture experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams

- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
- Usage of generative AI tools to enhance workflow efficiency, with a willingness to learn effective prompting and evaluation practices
- Ability to recognize opportunities where generative AI could enhance products, workflows, or customer experiences

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
